Draft ElWG – “a new start for the electricity market”

Authors: Johannes Hartlieb, Mario Laimgruber, Alexander Gimona

The Electricity Industry Act (ElWG) is now under review again. We have already extensively examined the first draft review from January 2024, including in the following articles:

  • ElWG Check: simplified electricity marketing
  • ElWG Check: the draft law at a glance
  • ElWG Check: upgrade for energy communities
  • ElWG Check: peer-to-peer contracts – power from me to you
  • ElWG Check: (no) (network) connection under this number?
  • ElWG Check: new opportunities for direct lines

In all discussions about the fair distribution of (grid expansion) costs, it is clear that the new Electricity Industry Act will offer enormous opportunities:

  • Massive simplification of energy contracting
  • Expansion of the prosumer concept
  • Alternative forms of community energy
  • Simplification of billing
  • Clear regulations on energy storage
  • Flexibilization of network connection

This opens the door to business models that previously were either not feasible or only implementable with considerable uncertainty.

We will closely examine the current draft review (including the explanatory notes) and discuss it here and elsewhere.
