Constitutional Law Symposium 2023 – Does democracy have a future?

Should we be concerned about democracy? Until a few years ago, it seemed firmly established in our country and on the rise worldwide. Today, little of the optimism from the 1990s remains. The reasons for this are manifold. The crises of the past two decades, most recently the return of war to Europe, have played a significant role. In addition, the Internet and social media have dramatically changed the traditional channels of communication and thus also the conditions for democratic discourse. The resulting possibilities for manipulation pose a further threat to our democracy!

Against this backdrop, the third Constitutional Law Symposium of the Walter Haslinger Private Foundation is dedicated to the question: “Does democracy have a future?”

The event is under the patronage of the former President of the Constitutional Court, SC iR Univ.-Prof. Dr. Gerhart Holzinger. Renowned speakers will have their say: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Peter M. Huber, Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, Chair of Public Law and State Philosophy and Judge at the Federal Constitutional Court from 2010 to 2023, Univ.-Prof. Dr. Magdalena Pöschl, University of Vienna, Institute of Constitutional and Administrative Law as well as Univ.-Prof. Dr. Christiane Wendehorst, University of Vienna, Institute of Civil Law.

The following panel discussion, which will be chaired by Wolfgang Sablatnig, Tiroler Tageszeitung, will feature – in addition to the above-mentioned speakers – Univ.-Prof. Dr. Reinhard C. Heinisch, Paris Lodron University Salzburg, Department of Political Science, and MMag. Dr. Kathrin Stainer-Hämmerle, University of Applied Sciences Carinthia.
