JKU: Wilhelm Bergthaler new Dean of the Faculty of Law

Univ.-Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Bergthaler has been appointed new Dean of the Faculty of Law. Bergthaler, already a long-time professor of environmental law at the JKU, officially assumed leadership of the prestigious faculty on October 1st, 2023.

A pioneer in environmental law – Bergthaler’s contribution to Austria’s legal system

For years, Univ.-Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Bergthaler has had decisive influence on Austria’s environmental law. His focus revolves around environmental procedures for industrial and infrastructure facilities, in addition to providing comprehensive counsel in the field of public commercial law, ranging from product and energy law to liability law. As a university professor of environmental law at the JKU, he educates the next generation of legal professionals and shares his profound knowledge. Bergthaler is also known for his academic endeavors, numerous publications as an editor, and his recognition through international publications. Within the International Bar Association, he serves as “Co-Chair” of the “Environmental, Health and Safety Law Committee”.

Regarding his appointment as Dean of the Faculty of Law at the JKU Linz, Bergthaler says: “Law at the JKU has a unique locational advantage: In an interdisciplinary environment, the diverse dimensions of law can be experienced – as an instrument for resolving conflicts and for coping with the social, technological, ecological and economic challenges of our time. I have frequently turned to the JKU as a lawyer when it came to not only analyzing legal issues, but also thinking constructively ahead. It is an honor to teach here as a professor and to serve as Dean. I look forward to collaborating with Vice Dean David Leeb and Vice Dean Martina Schickmair on behalf of the faculty.”

Combining passion and profession

“My passion for literature was the starting point of my university career,” Bergthaler reflects. Parallel to his English studies, he also enrolled in law. After completing his studies, he moved to Linz, where he successfully combined his passion and his profession as an Attorney-at-Law at the international law firm Haslinger / Nagele. In 1999, he founded the Vienna office of Haslinger / Nagele.
