Haslinger / Nagele announces Kaktus Cartoon Award

The “Schule des Ungehorsams” (School of Disobedience) together with Haslinger / Nagele announces the Kaktus Cartoon Award, which is bestowed to international cartoonists who take a critical and humorous look at our society, for the first time. A top-class jury selects the winners.

The Kaktus 2023 awards the best cartoons on the topic of climate change. We can see the effects of climate change everywhere – locally and globally. It is high time we changed our behavior to avert the worst. The caricature can make a convincing contribution here by making grievances visible and comprehensible and by inspiring new ideas and approaches to solutions.

As part of the Kaktus Cartoon Award, Haslinger / Nagele will award the special prize for caricatures in the category “Caricature & Law“. This special prize is dedicated to the topic of climate justice. Who are the ones mainly responsible for climate change? Who are the sufferers? Does the law promote or block the necessary transformation? Do protests have an effect? What do they achieve? Does justice exist in this context?

The best cartoons will be on display in an exhibition at the Schlossmuseum Linz, where the award ceremony will also take place. The bestowal of the Kaktus Award will be accompanied by a legal symposium on caricature & law.

“Caricature can make an important contribution to public discourse, as it is able to distort absurd processes in politics and society to the point of recognizability. Long live the cactus!”

Gerhard Haderer, cartoonist and founder of the School of Disobedience

“As Attorneys, we see it as our responsibility to open up and secure spaces for caricature –spaces for opposition and dissent. And for disobedience. Together with the School of Disobedience, we have therefore decided to announce a prize for cartoons that critically reflect and comment on our legal system.”

    Wilhelm Bergthaler, Haslinger / Nagele

“Not only in challenging times is it important to honor artistic achievements that critically analyze current conditions and still manage to entertain. As the Upper Austrian Kultur GmbH, we are pleased to have a caricature award that is committed to social discourse.”

Alfred Weidinger, Managing Director of the OÖ Landes-Kultur GmbH
