New SME funding: trademarks and designs at half the price
2021 is a good year to register logos and designs since small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) can apply for financing under a 20 million euro grant scheme for trademark and design protection.
Funding must be applied for at the EUIPO, the European Intellectual Property Office, whereby European small and medium-sized enterprises can reclaim around 50 % of the costs for a national and EU trademark or design application. In 2021, funding can be applied for within five specified time frames. After receiving the funding approval from the EUIPO, trademarks and designs can be registered within thirty days. As soon as the trademarks or designs have been registered, the refund must be requested by December 31st, 2021 (withdrawal request) – the refund will then be made within thirty days after the EUIPO has decided on the withdrawal request. For European small and medium-sized companies, this means easier registration of trademark rights.
