Challenges in ramping up the hydrogen industry

Does Europe’s energy future lie in hydrogen? The expansion of the hydrogen industry comes with a variety of challenges:

  • Establishing a Europe-wide regulatory framework
  • Financing the necessary infrastructurer
  • Creating supply and demand

But that’s not all: hydrogen also needs to be “green“.

When is hydrogen green?

In a recent article for the specialist journal ÖZW, Alexander Gimona and Johannes Hartlieb address the question of when hydrogen can be classified as renewable.

Summary: The high expectations of the Commission’s legal acts have only been partially fulfilled: On the one hand, there is now a legal framework that companies can follow. On the other hand, this legal framework is often seen as excessive and overly complicated. The last word has probably not yet been spoken.
